Established in 1991, the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit public policy institute dedicated to strengthening the structural and ethical foundations of Israeli democracy. Situated at the critical juncture between academia and government, IDI provides innovative policy solutions to the most urgent problems facing Israel today.
In all the fields of its activity, IDI combines high-level academic research with hands-on implementation. As both a “think-tank” and a “do-tank,” IDI operates along three main axes:
- Research
As a formulator of solutions, IDI executes cutting-edge policy research on the issues critical to Israel's survival as a Jewish and democratic state;
- Debate
As a bridge of ideas, IDI strives to create broad societal consensus through the initiation of public forums for open debate of the most divisive issues confronting Israeli society today;
- Reform
As a catalyst for change, IDI formulates actionable proposals for reform backed by concrete implementation strategies
IDI’s senior fellows comprise some of Israel’s top academics and thinkers. Their research falls primarily within the following subject areas:
- Religion and State
- National Security
- Constitutional Theory
