This is the first comprehensive examination of the evolution of executive governance in Israel.

The book describes and analyzes the political and bureaucratic structures and processes that led to the predominance of the executive in policymaking and governance.

The organizational structure of the offices at the command of the prime minister are considered, and changes in their structure analyzed. The political styles and biographies of the eleven people who served as prime minister are compared, as are their patterns of appointment of both professional and political advisers and aides.

The impact of the extraordinary period in which the direct election of the prime minister was in effect is assessed. The book also analyzes other political and administrative reforms and their consequences for the Knesset, political parties, governing coalitions and nonelected public authorities, including the Bank of Israel, the attorney-general, and the comptroller-general.
