The Forum for Political Reform in Israel, chaired by Supreme Court President (Ret.) Justice Meir Shamgar, met for a second time on January 3rd to discuss options for electoral reform.

January 4 - IDI's Police and Society Forum

On 4 January 2010, IDI hosted its third Police and Society Forum. The Forum is the first platform established in Israel for discussion of important issues in the relationship between the Israeli public and the Israeli Police Force.

The year 2009 marked twenty-one years since the major wave of immigration to Israel from the Former Soviet Union. On 13 January 2010, IDI hosted a roundtable discussion of the integration of this immigrant group into Israeli society.

On Sunday, 17 January 2010, IDI hosted the AIPAC National Board of Directors for a closed-door briefing on the appropriate legal framework for counterterrorism in the post-9/11 era.

January 20 - George Shultz Roundtable Forum: Biometric Database Law
|
|
On 20 January 2010, government officials, professional experts, and scholars discussed the proposed biometric database law and its implications for both the struggle against crime and civil liberties.

IDI Senior Fellow Awarded Hebrew University's Prestigious President's Prize for Outstanding Researcher
|
The IDI family congratulates Professor Yuval Shany, IDI Senior Fellow and director of the Terrorism and Democracy project, for his receipt of the 2009 President's Prize for Outstanding Researcher by Hebrew University President, Prof. Menachem Ben-Sasson, on January 24, 2010. Among the reasons given for this honor are his "impressive number of innovative, groundbreaking publications..."

State Ordered to Renew Palestinian Access to Route 443
In late December 2009, the Israeli High Court of Justice ordered the State to reopen Route 443, a road traveling through the West Bank that was closed to Palestinian traffic due to terrorist attacks in 2002. IDI's Terrorism and Democracy Newsletter contains a summary and brief discussion of the decision.
