הוועידה השנתית של המועצה הבינלאומית המייעצת למכון הישראלי לדמוקרטיה

תאריכי האירוע:
22/10/2011 - 23/10/2011

On October 23-24, 2011, IDI's International Advisory Council (IAC) will convene at the Hoover Institution in Stanford, California, for two days of intensive meetings in which they will explore challenges that the State of Israel faces in democratic state-building and IDI's role in addressing these issues. This event follows the IAC's Inaugural Retreat, which was convened in Wye River, Maryland, in 2009 and its second meeting, which took place in Jerusalem in 2010.

The event will be chaired by the Honorable George P. Shultz, Former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of IDI's International Advisory Council. Participants will include IDI's International Chairman Mr. Bernard Marcus, Founder and former CEO of The Home Depot; members of IDI's board of directors and management, and a cross-section of IDI’s International Advisory Council that includes:

  • Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella, Justice, Canadian Supreme Court
  • Prof. Gerhard Casper, President Emeritus, Stanford University
  • Dr. Sidney Drell, Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution
  • Justice Dalia Dorner, Justice Emerita, Israeli Supreme Court
  • Dr. Martin Indyk, VP and Director, Foreign Policy Program, Brookings Institution
  • Dr. Josef Joffe, Publisher-Editor of Die Zeit
  • Prof. Christoph Markschies, Former President, Humboldt University
  • Prof. Robert H. Mnookin, Professor, Harvard Law School
  • Prof. Dominique Moisi, Special Adviser, French Institute for International Relations
  • Prof. Henry Rosovsky, Professor Emeritus, Harvard University
  • Prof. Gabriela Shalev, Former Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations
  • Justice Meir Shamgar, President Emeritus, Israeli Supreme Court
  • Judge Abraham D. Sofaer, Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution

Issues that will be discussed during the two days of intensive meetings will be the current state of Israeli democracy, IDI's role in political reform in Israel, IDI's involvement in efforts to curb anti-democratic legislation, the tension between religion and state in Israel, and lessons learned from the Gaza flotillas. Participants will receive an update on Israel's economic situation from Bank of Israel Governor Prof. Stanley Fischer, hear a leading advisor to the King of Morocco offer his insights on the Arab Spring, and learn about Israel's current security situation from a former Israeli Chief of Staff. Together with members of IDI's board and IDI's senior leadership, they will also devote extensive thought and discussion to IDI's institutional strategy and the best means for implementing IDI's vision in the year to come.
