The Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) deals with policy planning, with reforms in the fields of government, civil service, and democratic institutions, and with the ethical foundations of democracy. The institute was founded in 1991 and is an independent, apolitical, and non-partisan organization, straddling the fence between politics and academics.
Through several different initiatives, IDI strives to strengthen democratic values and institutions in Israel. IDI initiates projects, directs research programs, and publishes books and policy papers, all in order to supply certain target audiences (such as legislators, decision makers, government officials, and the general public) with reliable and accurate information, thus enriching public discourse. The Institute also makes recommendations in order to improve the way the Israeli government functions, and to reinforce the vision of a stable parliamentary democracy, which is best suited to the framework and social values of Israeli society.
IDI senior fellows, some of Israel's top academics, direct projects in a variety of areas pertaining to Israeli society and government. Each project is based on comparative research and alternative models, and presents the target audience with viable strategies and possible courses of action. Furthermore, IDI promotes extensive discussion on specific vital issues, and organizes functions and events which serve as a platform for these discussions, bringing together politicians, academics, and experts from a wide range of fields. Examples of such events are the Annual Economic Forum, and the George Schultz Roundtable Forum.
The products of IDI's efforts are presented to the public in several ways:
• Direct contact with decision makers
• Events and functions, some of which are open to the public
• Publications, including books, policy papers, and journals
• The IDI website – our primary method for sharing our research, conclusions, and recommendations with the public
IDI's main goals:
• To promote structural reform in the fields of politics and economics
• To provide information and comparative data in the field of Israeli governance
• To serve as a consulting body for decision makers, as well as the public
• To promote discourse on issues which are of interest to the public
