IDI offers a small number of exciting internship opportunities for exceptional candidates with an undergraduate, graduate or professional background. The program provides a unique opportunity to work with IDI scholars and staff on policy proposals aimed at strengthening Israeli democracy. Interns spend a minimum of six weeks in residence at the Institute in Jerusalem, in the course of which they participate fully in the daily life of IDI. Although interns typically choose to spend their summer at IDI, the program is open year-round. Proficiency in both English and Hebrew is preferred but not required. Please note that at present we are not in a position to offer funding to interns.
Four types of internships are currently being offered:
Constitutional Law Internship (New!)
Constitutional Law interns will work closely with an IDI research team focusing on Constitutional Law and the Legislative Process. This internship is open to students or graduates of an American or Canadian law school. Preference will be given to students or graduates with background in Constitutional Law or in the legislative process of their own country. A special advantage will be given to applicants with experience working with members of Congress or the Canadian Parliament. Time commitment: At least one month, three days of work per week. Positions are available for the summer of 2012 and throughout the 2012–2013 academic year.
Development Internship
Development interns work with IDI's development and marketing teams on a specific project or projects over a period of six weeks or more. The type of project varies according to the need and the particular skills of the intern. In the past, our Development Interns have worked on:
- Marketing support, including website development and drafting marketing materials
- Donor relations support
- Hosting international visitors
- Organizing events in collaboration with IDI’s Conferencing Department
- Public Relations support, including database development and international communications operations
Website Internship
Website interns will be exposed to a wide-range of content related to Israeli democracy and the activities of IDI, as they assist in building the new IDI site. This position involves editing and uploading content from the old IDI website, preparing new content for the website, and assisting with the ongoing maintenance of the site. An IDI website internship is a great way to learn the basics of working with state-of-the-art content management systems while being exposed to the activities of the Institute and rich and varied content about Israeli democracy. Strong English writing and editing skills are necessary, as is comfort in a computerized environment. Knowledge of Hebrew is desirable. Although IDI internships are generally limited to applicants who are prepared to make a six week commitment, one-month internships may be considered in this catagory. Two positions for website interns have been filled for the summer of 2012, but applications are being accepted for the 2012–2013 academic year.
Research Internship
Research interns are assigned to one of IDI's seven research programs, based upon the specific needs of our Research Fellows and the particular skills of the intern. This position involves working closely with the Research Fellow and research staff in a particular subject area over a minimum period of six weeks. Here again, the topic of research varies according to the circumstances. Please note that research positions are limited and highly competitive. Therefore, we encourage applicants to explore our website and familiarize themselves with IDI’s research areas before applying for a Research Internship. Your application will benefit from a close match between your area of expertise and the research agenda of a particular IDI project. If you think your skills may be suited to more than one area of research, please explain this in your cover letter.
