Biography
Prof. Eli Shaltiel is a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), and editor-in-chief of IDI Press.
Born in Tel-Aviv in 1945, Prof. Shaltiel earned his Master’s degree in History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and wrote his PhD, titled "Pinhas Rutenberg: Life and Times", at Tel-Aviv University, under the auspices of Prof. Anita Shapira and Prof. Michael Confino.
Over the years, Prof. Shaltiel has taught Russian Studies at the Hebrew University, and History at Stanford University and at the Tel Aviv School of Arts. Today, he teaches History at the Hebrew University and at Sapir College.
In 1987 Prof. Shaltiel was appointed editor-in-chief of the non-fiction section of Am-Oved press, and he is also the editor of the Ofakim library at Am-Oved. Since 1975, Shaltiel has been writing articles on a wide range of topics, including literature and science, in many journals and newspapers including Ha'aretz, Ma'ariv, Yedioth Ahronot, and Z'manim.
