The July 2010 issue of IDI’s Terrorism and Democracy Newsletter includes four articles. In the first article, we discuss a recent decision by the Israeli High Court of Justice to reject a petition submitted by an Israeli NGO against opening Route 443 to Palestinian vehicles – a move that the NGO claimed would endanger security on the road. In the second article, we address the findings of the internal IDF investigative committee headed by Major General Giora Eiland into the IDF's conduct during the recent Gaza "flotilla incident." The third article notes the recent appointment of three members to the U.N. Fact Finding Mission established following the “flotilla incident.” The fourth and final article contains an update regarding the IDF's internal investigation of "Operation Cast Lead". It includes a report about the Judge Advocate General’s decision to file criminal charges against a soldier who deliberately shot at a group of Palestinian civilians who were holding white flags.
IDI’s monthly Terrorism and Democracy Newsletter aims to shed light on some relatively unknown measures and policies adopted by Israel or related to Israel, and to foster discussion on the balance between security interests on one hand, and democratic principles and human rights on the other hand. It surveys recent developments in Israeli law and practices that are intended to reduce or repress terrorist threats. IDI believes that a greater knowledge of Israel's experience in this area may be of value to other societies. We also believe that engaging in international and comparative discourse about Israel's experience is valuable to Israeli society.
