The Green Economy Forum is an economic-social-environmental forum that brings together young leaders from different sectors to participate in a series of discussions pertaining to a green economy.
Goals of the Forum
- To formulate a proposal for long-term social-economic-environmental reforms in Israel and present it to relevant decision-makers.
- To formulate recommendations on ways to handle short-term economic challenges such as green taxes.
- To raise awareness of important environmental issues among young leaders, to motivate them, and to provide them with the necessary tools and knowledge so that they too can make a difference.
Creating Young Leadership by Building Consensus
A committee was founded, headed by IDI President Dr. Arye Carmon, in order to advance the Forum. Committee members include ten young leaders from different organizations (from the prime minister's office, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of National Infrastructures, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Bank of Israel, the Manufacturers Association of Israel, academia, and environmental groups). These leaders are mapping out the government's role in green economics. The forum's first issue to be discussed is turning Israel into one of the leading countries in producing alternative sources of energy by 2020. Directors from energy-providers and renowned international experts will be addressing the forum.
The forum is guided by the notion that the way to protect the environment must be done by consensus within different sectors of the public. And, promoting awareness and reaching consensus is the way towards reaching decision-makers and promoting positive change.
Activities in 2008
The forum's first year will be dedicated primarily to discussions on energy, while focusing on forms of renewable energy and discussing solar energy, alternative sources of energy, and ways of preserving energy.
