Israel as a Democracy Symposium: Session 2

Event Date(s):
1/6/2010

Overview

The Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), in coordination with the Consulate General of Israel to the Southeast, the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, the Anti-Defamation League, and the American Jewish Committee hosted the second lecture in a year-long symposium series on domestic challenges facing the Jewish State. Prof. Yuval Shany --IDI Senior Research Fellow and director of research on Terror and Democracy--presented a lecture on "Dilemmas of a Young Democracy in the War on Terror: Can Israel Win and Preserve Her Soul?" to a community wide forum on Wednesday evening, January 6.

The lecture was followed by a moderated debate.

The 'Israel as a Democracy' sumposium series is part of a nation-wide campaign to increase the level of knowledge and debate on Israeli domestic issues.

Program Feedback

"The speaker made clear what his frame of reference was – the legal framework that defines a democracy.  He was outstanding in his presentation of where he thought the Israeli judiciary did well, where it failed, and how it had to overcome the lack of a constitutional basis to establish the underpinnings for its decisions."
D.G – Atlanta, GA

“Kol Hakavod, it was great, interesting and important.”
 T.B – Atlanta, GA

“Thank you for all your efforts and those of your organization in providing the community with this valuable information.”
 F.R. – Atlanta, GA

“I thoroughly enjoyed last night's IDI presentation. It was the first program of that type that I have attended. I don't know which was more interesting, the formal remarks or the Q&A session.”
 P.G. – Atlanta, GA

“The speaker did a fine job of handling questions and challenges from the floor.  I was impressed with the way he managed through potential hot topics.”
 D.G – Atlanta, GA

I wanted to thank you and all the people and organizations involved in organizing this event.  The facility was good, the speaker Mr. Shany was great…”
 H.S. – Atlanta, GA

"I thought the speaker was brilliant.  He has a wide-ranging grasp of the legal framework and histories of Israel, the U.S., and of several European countries."
D.G – Atlanta, GA
