On Thursday, October 21, 2010, the Israel Democracy Institute hosted a memorial event for Senior Fellow Prof. Asher Arian, who stood at the helm of IDI's flagship Political Reform Program and spearheaded the inclusion of The Guttman Center in IDI's activities. The event began with words of remembrance and continued with a roundtable discussion on "The State of Democracy in Israel Today," which was moderated by Prof. Tamar Hermann.

ABOUT PROF. ASHER ARIAN

Prof. Asher Arian, z"l

An international expert in public opinion surveys, Prof. Asher Arian was a Senior Fellow at IDI and one of the pillars of the Institute. A leading figure in political science in Israel, he pioneered the field of elections research based on election polls. He was one of the founders of the Political Science Department at Tel Aviv University and served as a full professor at the University of Haifa and as Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York.

Prof. Arian headed the Guttman Center for Applied Social Research at IDI from 1998 to 2010. During the course of his career, he published dozens of books, papers and articles about governance and regimes, elections, public opinion and political behavior in Israel, which compared the local findings with those of international settings.
