Law and the Community: The Takana Forum

On Monday May 10, 2010, the George Shultz Roundtable Forum convened to discuss the topic of "Law and the Community," focusing on the example of the Takana Forum – a group of scholars, educators, and religious established to deal with complaints about sexual harassment by authority figures within the religious Zionist community.

The activities of the Takana forum raise both theoretical and practical questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages of having internal community organizations that seek to enforce unique norms of behavior on members of the community? What conditions should be placed upon the activities of such organizations?

These questions were at the heart of panel discussion that brought together academicians, experts in law, public servants, and representatives of the Takana Forum. Participants in this roundtable discussion, which took place at the Israel Democracy Institute on May 10, 2010, included:
