The Israel Democracy Institute Held an Event to Mark the Publication of a New Hebrew Translation of Hans Kelsen's Classic, "The Nature and Value of Democracy" On Wednesday, April 6th, 2005, the Israel Democracy Institute held an event to mark the publication of a new Hebrew translation of Hans Kelsen's classic, The Nature and Value of Democracy. Kelsen, one of the greatest theorists of democracy in the 20th century held that democracy is the best means for preserving freedom. Among the speakers at the event was Chief Justice Aharon Barak who stated that this clear and concise translation is of grave importance. Moreover, he sees Kelsen's book as significant in understanding democracy. Professor Yitzhak Englard, a retired Supreme Court judge as well as the translator of the book, spoke of how Kelsen's book had greatly influenced him and his work as a judge. Englard elaborated upon how the book, although written in the 1920s, is highly relevant today. Among the audience were some of Israel's leading jurists.

This book is part of a series of translations that the IDI has published including On Democracy by Robert A. Dahl and The Future of Democracy by Norberto Bobbio.
